By MATTHEW BROWN Journal Staff Writer Robin Hines, the Houston County assistant superintendent for school operations, and Darryl Albritton, principal at Perry High School, was named the two superintendent for the position of Houston County School Superintendent. Board of Education chairman Tom Walmer announced the two names at Tuesday’s regular board meeting. Walmer said the board received four applications for the position after current superintendent David Carpenter announced his retirement. The application process, which was limited to within the county school system, ran from Feb. 24 to March 4. Walmer said two of the four applicants did not meet the minimum requirements spelled out in the job description. He said both Hines and Albritton will be interviewed during a future called board meeting. Albritton is a graduate of Perry High School and has served as the school’s principal since 2004. He was previously principal at Kings Chapel Elementary, a Perry High assistant principal and, in 1998, was Teacher of the Year at Tucker Elementary School. Hines is a former principal at Northside High School from 2006-08. • Also at the Tuesday meeting, the board nominated member Skip Dawkins for the position of Georgia School Board Association District 12 director. The election is April 20 and the term runs from July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2013. The board also elected member Marianne Melnick as delegate and Fred Wilson as alternate for the 2010 GSBA Delegate Assembly. Carpenter recognized the entire school board during School Board Appreciation Week, commenting that Houston County had “the finest board in the state.” Board member Griff Clements, who represents District 6, announced that he plans to run for re-election. His current term expires on Dec. 31.
