  The Houston Medical Center was busier in 2009 than in 2008, with three percent  more admissions, and  a two percent increase in surgery and endoscopy levels.
 At Perry Hospital, the smaller of the two hospitals operated by Houston Healthcare, however, admissions were 15 percent lower in 2009 than in 2008, and the surgery and endoscopy volume dropped by five percent.  
On the positive side, Perry Emergency Department showed an increase of 7.83 percent (total visits were 16,058) and outpatient visits were up by over three percent.
It was also noted that there were 2,100 births at Houston Medical Center in 2009. Perry Hospital no long has maternity services.
These figures were discussed at the February Houston Healthcare System and Houston Hospitals Board meetings on Wednesday night, which were largely closed for executive sessions, but did have some portions of the meetings open to the public.
Increases in patient use were also shown at the following.
•    Houston Medical Center Emergency Department, with visits up by 17.23%, totaling 61,457
•    Lake Joy Med-Stop visits totaled 12,199 (*purchased in October 2008)
•    Houston Lake Med-Stop  with visits up by 1.37%, totaling 11,396
•    Houston Lake Rehab with visits up by 5.81%, totaling 5,447
•    Pavilion Med-Stop with visits up by 9.99%, totaling 15,884
•    Pavilion Diagnostic Center with visits up by 4.28%, totaling 19,135
  According to a financial report presented at the meeting  the net patient revenue for Houston Healthcare was $250.5 million.  The system wrote off a total of $50.8 million of gross charges to bad debt, indigent and charity care.
