By WES REYNOLDS Journal Staff Writer The Houston County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to declare Mar. 8-14 as Georgia’s official Census Week at Tuesday’s meeting. The Georgia Complete Committee, a collaborative effort to promote census awareness, established Mar. 11 as the official kick-off day to promote the census in Georgia and invite local Complete Count Committees to encourage residents to mail completed forms back to the government. The Census begins April 1. Jacob Cox, addressed the commissioners late in the meeting. “We are using many different avenues to help get the message out,” Cox said. “We want to encourage people to take part any way we can.” Commissioner’s Chairman Ned Sanders gave those in attendance a brief history lesson on the origin of the census before making a prediction that 137,000 people will be found to reside in Houston County. Before the meetings end, the Commissioners voted to approve a public auction for the sale of items declared surplus to the county. The auction is scheduled for Tues., April 27, at 1:00 p.m. at the Houston County Warehouse. The public is expected to be able to inspect the items within the next two weeks.
