By KRYSTAL RINER Managing Editor For the next 15 years a Macon man will see life from behind bars. Larry Charles Akins, 36, of Riverview Road. in Macon, plead guilty in Houston Superior Court on Thursday to possession methamphetamine, possession codeine, possession of a firearm during a crime, and possession of firearm by a convicted felon. According a release from the District Attorney’s office, Atkins was sentenced to 30 years and ordered to serve 15 of those years in prison. In addition to the prison time, Akins was ordered to pay a $1,000.00 fine plus numerous additional fees. Akins was also banished from Houston County and most of the surrounding counties for the entire 30-year sentence. Akins, who was already on parole/probation for previous drug convictions, also admitted to violating his probation by committing these new offenses and it was revoked as well. “ I remember this guy from 2006. The last time I sent him to prison he was going by Vanzant,” said George Hartwig the Senor Assistant DA for Houston County. He continued to say, “ Larry Atkins is a career criminal.” Perry Police officer James Jones arrested Atkins on Dec. 22. Jones saw him driving a vehicle with a stolen license tag. According to the release, during the stop Jones saw a Glock handgun in the vehicle and found a small amount of marijuana in Atkins pocket. Atkins was arrested and a more detailed search of the vehicle revealed the methamphetamine, codeine, and xanax. Judge Katherine Lumsden imposed the sentence on Atkins.
