Dr. Eugen Schoenfeld, Holocaust survivor and author of “My Reconstructed Life” spoke to the students of Feagin Middle School last Friday.
The 84-year-old talked about his experience to about 40 students.
Eugene was interned by the Germans from 1944 to 1945 in four camps; Auschwitz, Dachau, Muhldorf and Warsaw.
Julie Rehner, Feagin Mill Middle music teacher, was excited about Schoen’s speech.
“This program will provided a valuable enrichment opportunity for our students as they study a unit on the Holocaust,” Rehner said. “There are very few survivors left to tell this story.”
Schoenfeld was born in 1925 in the Carpathian town of Munkacs in what is now Ukraine. He was raised and educated in the deeply rooted traditions of the Jewish faith amid a large and active Jewish community. However, Hitler’s Final Solution would irrevocably change his close-knit family. Having survived the ghetto and internment in Germany’s infamous camps, Schoenfeld immigrated to the United States.
Upon liberation in on May 2, 1935, he attended Charles University Prague Medical School and completed his M.A. in sociology at Washington University. Schoenfeld completed his formal education with a Ph.D. in Sociology from Southern Illinois University. After a successful academic career, which culminated in the Chairmanship of the Department of Sociology at Georgia State University, where he developed the department’s Ph.D. program, Schoenfeld took up residence in Atlanta with his wife, Jean.”
He has taught at a numerous institutions, including Harris Teacher’s College, Southern Illinois University and Memphis State University. He worked as a contributing writer for the Atlanta Jewish Times from 1995 to 2000.
