By WES REYNOLDS Journal Staff Writer Newly appointed Warner Robins city clerk Alton Mattox was approved by City Council Tuesday. Mattox, a retired educator who was appointed by Mayor Chuck Shaheen, was confirmed for the position in a 5-1 vote. The hiring of Mattox comes nearly three months after former city clerk Stan Martin was placed on administrative leave following an incident where he and information technology employee Christine Armstrong attempted to gain access to the mayor’s office. Before his dismissal from the position on Dec. 29, Martin said his actions were an attempt to dispel rumors of guns and money hidden in the ceiling by the late Mayor Donald Walker. The attempt, which included the use of a ladder to look above ceiling tiles in an adjacent office, resulted in a unanimous vote by council for his termination. Armstrong received a letter of termination by mail. The gathering was the Mayor Shaheen’s first full meeting as mayor, as well as newly elected council members Mike Daley and Paul Shealy. Shealy and Councilman Tom Simms were appointed to the city’s pension committee.
