By CHARLOTTE PERKINS Journal Staff Writer Despite the pressing problems faced by the state, only 12,050 of Houston County’s registered voters turned out for Tuesday’s primary election to take part in choosing the next governor. The turnout was 16.3 percent countywide, ranging from 24.5 percent in the Miller Elementary School precinct to 10.03 percent in the Warner Robins Recreation precinct. Perry voters came in a little above the county average with 19.84 percent and 18.42 percent at the two precincts voting at Rozar Park. Republicans had a resounding majority of voters in Houston County. County-wide, 8259 Republican primary ballots were cast, compared to 3789 cast by Democrats. For the most part, local voters went with the statewide trends, a notable exception being that John Oxendine, who came in fourth statewide with 17 percent of the vote, came in second in Houston County with 1960 votes, leaving many Republicans with a new choice to make in the run-off between Karen Handel and Nathan Deal. Democrats in Houston followed the statewide voting pattern, giving former Governor Roy A. Barnes a resounding lead over his nearest competitor, Thurbert Baker. Republican Austin Scott, who received 52.4 percent of the vote statewide, but only 3,302 to 2,896 for Ken DeLoach in Houston County, will square off against 8th District U.S. Rep. Jim Marshall in November.
